SHOW ME – DO NOT TELL ME

Yesterday my neighbour, a young student and graduate of economics, who has finally landed a good starting position as a trainee in a multinational corporation in Milan, reached out and contacted me on Skype last night saying “Vincent, my boss told me my writing in English is terrible.”

Indeed, there is a big gap from academic writing to business writing. And daily I watch in horror as I watch and I am forced to watch the most horrific power point presentations.

We do not expect our lover to tell us they love us without showing their love: flowers, dinner, a movie, a night on the town, etc. So why punish business people with bad power point presentations that give a list of statistics, numbers, percentages, without any pictures to support your sales pitch? Most horrific are the how to presentations that do not show how but give numbers on the importance of how.

Here are some basic presentation rules,

  1. Keep it Simple. PowerPoint uses slides with a horizontal or “Landscape” orientation. …
  2. Limit bullet points & text. …(Do not give us a book to read)
  3. Limit transitions & builds (animation) …
  4. Use high-quality graphics. …
  5. Have a visual theme
  6. Use appropriate charts. …
  7. Use color well. …
  8. Choose your fonts well.

Style is everything

In communication, it is not only what you say, but how you say it.

The body form of communication includes:

The Head – Headline (Title) – The More Interesting the Title, the better

Slogan – (examples,  Just do itLife is Now, Creator of Customized English)

Three positive points (In business, we like solutions. We have enough problems at home)

One negative Point (In order to show that you are not in a fantasy land and to be real – But the degree of negativity must be something you can solve or have a plan to solve it.)

In conclusion – A brief summary of your presentation.

Q & A (Questions and Answers at the end is a breath of fresh air and it involves the participants)
