“Show me your hands,” said Shirley Lee, a Chinese journalism colleague of mine, one drunken night in her downtown Toronto apartment, many, many years ago. “I want to see your future.”
I never believed in psychics, tarot cards, and palm reading. But I was leaving my hometown and I never knew if we would ever see each other again. We were both tipsy with red wine. All was possible.
“Which palm do you want to read?” I asked.
“The right hand.”
“Why not the left?”
“The right hand is the dominant hand for most people,” she said. “The right hand represents the future. While the left hand represents the past and habits the person was born with.”
“Ok. My fate is in your hands.”
